GRE

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test designed to assess the general academic skills of graduates, regardless of their field of study. It evaluates how well an individual’s undergraduate education has developed their abilities in verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and abstract thinking. Developed and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the GRE aims to measure long-term academic skills that are not tied to any specific subject area.

The GRE General Test is primarily conducted as a computer-based exam at Prometric testing centers. It consists of six sections: one Analytical Writing section (always presented first), which includes two separately timed tasks—an issue task and an argument task. This is followed by two Verbal Reasoning sections, two Quantitative Reasoning sections, and one additional section that is either unscored (experimental) or for research purposes. These five sections can appear in any order, and the unscored section is indistinguishable from the others.

The total duration of the GRE General Test is approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes. Test-takers are given a one-minute break after each section and a 10-minute break following the third section.
